THE ROAD
I decided to finally break down and read this book before going and seeing it in the theater. This is the first novel I think I have ever read in my life that was not divided into chapters, which I found a little odd. I have read reviews where they say that there is no mention in the book of what disaster occured, I disagree. The following is an excerpt from page 52.
"The clock stopped at 1:17. A long shear of light and then a series of low concussions. He got up and went to the window. What is it? she said. He didnt answer. He went into the bathroom and threw the lightswitch but the power was already gone. A dull rose glow in the windowglass. He dropped to one knee and raised the lever to stop the tub and then turned on both taps as far as they would go. She was standing in the doorway in her nightwear, clutching the jamb, cradling her belley in one hand. What is it? she said. What is happening? I dont know. Why are you taking a bath? I'm not."
In my opinion it was a nuclear exchange. The "shear of light" is what is seen when a warhead reenters and "then a series of low concussions" are the nuclear weapons detonating. Then he fills the bathtub with water to insure they have water once the water pressure is gone. hmmm. The man in the story also talks about all the animal being gone, one may deduct from this that they may have been killed by fallout . He also describe the sky gray and not being able to see the sun during the day or the moon at night and its always very cold. Sound a little like nuclear winter. Mystery solved I think.
So in conclusion I think it is a long story about a man and a boy(is born after war) who survived a nuclear war and then have to survive the nuclear winter that follows. Hope the movie is better than the book.
